Working Together as One

Students take away a better understanding of cedar and its place in the natural world through hands on learning. They will take home a physical carving of their own to remember what they have learned.

This program meets a range of BC Curriculum Learning Outcomes as well as First Peoples Principles of Learning.

Our cedar is responsibly and respectfully harvested from sustainable sources.

Workshop Series Overview

In this workshop series designed for Grades 8-12, we focus on slowing down and changing our understanding of the world around us. Teachings on cedar and stories are shared, focusing on ancestral teachings of working with cedar.

Students will work together to learn basic carving methods, use Coast Salish carving tools, identify Coast Salish artistic elements, and complete a piece of their own. The teachings, the love and the stories that they hear and feel that day will be imbued into the cedar and will be brought into the home.

This work can be done on the Land, in circle either at the school or in the forest. It can also be done in the classroom if needed. These workshops are best done as a series of at least 4 to allow students enough time to carve, sand, and paint their own project to take home.
